A Single Sunbeam: Finding Light in Silence and Reflection

Issue #02 2026

Reflection

Francis of Assisi offers us this short gem;

“A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.”

Retreats give us the opportunity to re-set and take stock of our life. Taking the space, time and opportunity offered at these times may lead to us recognising the valuable gifts hiding under the surface. In this media focussed world it is easy to be overwhelmed with the constant flow of noise. These constant intrusions rarely offer fruitfulness in the spiritual sense. Stepping back from this constant noise helps refocus us on what is truly important in our daily life.

John O’Donohue in his book ‘Anam Cara’, contends:

“the inner life responds more to the gentle candlelight that illuminates a darkened room. In this muted light, the soul reveals its rich store of wisdom and allows for mysteries and questions to dance unheeded.

Watch how people are drawn to the dance of a campfire. They are drawn not only to its warmth, colour, and movement but to its primeval call to a deeper awareness. The call of the soul is part of who we are, and it is in filtered light that murmurs emerge”.

Enjoy the spirit of silence and peace that the House of Light offers. May your stay with us provide to you with the fruits of the inner life,

Br Bill Sullivan

Spiritual reading

Why not take up some spiritual reading during the year ahead. The following books are ones I highly recommend & are available from our gift shop.

‘Soul Murmurings’ – Andrew Kennelly

In Soul Murmurings – Living with Grace, Humility and Integrity, Andrew Kennelly uses these experiences and questions to explore the meaning of spirituality. Through personal stories, musings, quotations and questions, he invites readers on a personal journey of discovery.

‘Finding Your Hidden Treasure’ – Benignus O’Rourke

A contemplative path inwards, to the depths of your own being. Through silent prayer & meditation, & by discovering this ancient way of finding God, O’Rourke provides insight & guidance for your spiritual journey.

Moved by the poetry of Silence!

Beyond words there is the silence
the ground of our being
the profound inner silence
the Spiritual earth of our living.
here our hearts open to you
to our being one with each other in You.

Here we become immersed in the poetry of silence, the prayer of quiet
that voices our heart’s seeking
awakens our artistic self
expresses our life’s yearning
with the eloquence of the soft light of evening and the confidence of a strapping young mountain ash.
– Noel Davis
