At the Well: An Invitation to Living Water
Issue #03 2026
Reflection
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I will give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling to eternal life.” (John 4: 13-14)”
Jesus reminds us in this wonderful encounter that ‘he’ is all we need. We might like to sit and ponder these words and the invitation and challenge contained in them for us.
Do you believe that this ‘living water’ is all you need? Or do you seek to fill your needs with a variety of desires that still leaves you with an unquenchable thirst?
What prevents you from recognising or accepting this spring of water deep within?
The encounter with the Samaritan woman reminds us that Jesus is present in the messiness of our lives. He is waiting at the well, inviting us to sit and engage with him, sharing our hopes and our struggles. Are you willing to sit with Jesus at the well, opening yourself to the gift he is offering?
Enjoy the spirit of silence and peace that the House of Light offers. May your stay with us provide to you with the fruits of the inner life,
Br Bill Sullivan
Spiritual reading
Two books you might find helpful on your spiritual journey. Both are available in our gift shop.
‘Beyond the Edge’ – Andrew Mayes
I highly recommend this book! You are invited to journey through the Liminal space, the place of transformation, to a world of encounter with the Lord. A powerful discussion of how each of us is invited by Jesus to "come across to the other side", to cross over, to move out of our comfort zone and there to encounter him. Wherever we are invited to go with him, there will be a meeting!
‘Treasures in the Wilderness’ – Andrew Mayes
This exciting resource on desert spirituality is quite unlike any other: at once a physical journey to outstanding deserts of the planet and an odyssey of the soul. A journey of discovery takes us across five continents as we venture to places few pilgrims reach: the Gazan desert, the Sahara, the Australian outback, the Athos wilderness and the Ordos Desert of China, and the Syrian desert, among others.
A prayer from Leunig
Dear God,
We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace. Let us find such a place within ourselves. We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty. Let us find such a place within ourselves. We give thanks for places of nature’s truth and freedom, of joy, inspiration and renewal, places where all creatures may find acceptance and belonging. Let us search for these places: in the world, in ourselves and in others. Let us restore them. Let us strengthen and protect them and let us create them.
May we mend this outer world according to the truth of our inner life and may our souls be shaped and nourished by nature’s eternal wisdom. Amen
